Santa Monica Democrats Endorse Torie Osborn in Assembly Race

With over 90 people present, the  Santa Monica Democratic Club endorsed Tori Osborn, a Santa Monica resident,  for the newly drawn 50th Assembly District.

Santa Monica comprises 22% of likely voters in the district, and  will be a major battleground in the election this year.

Ms. Osborn, received 77% of the votes cast, current Assemblyperson Betsy Butler 13% and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom received 9%.

During the endorsement meeting, Osborn called for fiscal reform and a renewed commitment to public education, health care, job creation, and environmental protection.  She stressed her background as a non-profit executive, a community organizer, and an educator, saying her background prepared her to "tackle the tough stuff" and "forge lasting progressive change."

Based on a resolution passed unanimously by the general membership at the last membership meeting, this is the letter that was sent to Santa Monica City Counicl members on Item 7F, City Council agenda item on November 8 about an increase in campaign donation limit.

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers:

 

The Santa Monica Democratic Club has a commitment to campaign finance reform and finds that the proposed increase in campaign donation limits from $250 to $400 would disadvantage many individual Santa Monicans.  Please consider carefully, and retain the $250 which works so well, bridging the gap between the many who donate less than $100 and those who can afford to write checks over $100, but will not, especially in these recessionary times, donate the current maximum.  Increasing the maximum is to the advantage of deep-pocketed individuals and corporations, not to the ordinary citizen.

 

In addition, increasing the limit means campaign costs run further amok.  The amounts currently spent on campaigns, and the waste of paper on duplicative mailers, also argue for maintaining the lid we now have.

 

In July of 2008 (originally agendized in June of that year), the Council affirmed the $250 limit, with sound reasoning propounded in the Ordinance you passed, which is a part of this letter.  That affirmation was barely over three years ago.  We urge that you re-affirm that decision.
